  • Manual Handling Advice PART 1: Using A Passive Hoist To Transfer Clients Into A Phoenix and Sorrento

Manual handling is an area that we are often asked about and it is important to know different techniques that will assist in safe patient transfers.  The techniques you use can reduce the risk of injury and ensure that you are applying best clinical practices. There is no definite way to do patient transfers as each client has different needs and different pieces of equipment will be available to you.  It is important to assess the client abilities and choosing the best hoist that is suitable for their needs.

If you have been following us on social media you will see that we have teamed up with Seating Matters to create a three part video on manual handling. In the first part, our manual handling specialist, Mary Hickey uses a passive hoist, also known as a patient lift. Her expertise is nursing and has a wealth of experience in the field of manual handling.

The video contains useful tips on how to:

    • Correctly fit a sling.
    • Position a hoist correctly.
    • Safely transfer your client in and out of the chair.
    • Use the tilt in space function to assist transfers.

The chair in this video is the Seating Matters Sorrento chair, however the tips and advice in transferring your client in and out of the chair can be applied across the full range of Seating Matters chairs.

At Elite Healthcare, Martina Tierney from Seating Matters has personally trained all of our Seating Specialists who are equipped to advise you to answer any questions you may have. However, it is important to adhere to your own facility's guidelines and regulations.  If you are unsure, it is best to ask the clinician in charge of manual handling in your facility or care trust.

Our Seating Specialists are trained to carry out thorough Seating Assessments. If you have a client in mind who would benefit from this complimentary service, please get it touch today.
